Im Hinblick auf einige später komponierte Werke kommt dem Horntrio, als `Hommage á Brahms` bezeichnet, eine Schlüsselfunktion zu. Spektakulär an diesem Werk ist, allgemein gesagt, die Arbeit mit prägnanten thematischen Gestalten und fest umrissenen Formen. Das Trio beginnt mit einem Zitat, aber in charakteristischer Verbiegung: die berühmten traditionellen `Hornquinten` aus Beethovens Sonate `Les Adieux`. Ligeti macht sie zum Zentralthema seines Werkes, nicht nur im 1. Satz, sondern auch in einer zur Fünferfolge erweiterten Form, die das Thema der Schlusspassacaglia bildet
