The two Sonatas op. 49 published under the title of "Easy Sonatas" are often the first Beethoven sonatas with which advanced piano students can demonstrate their talent. The relatively high opus number is misleading because the two pieces in two movements were composed at about the same time as the Piano Sonatas op. 10, that is to say between 1796 and 1798. It was probably on the initiative of Beethoven's brother, Carl, that they were printed seven years later. After he had unsuccessfully offered them to several publishers, in 1805 a publishing house in Vienna sacrificed itself - not suspecting the value of the treasure it had acquired. Because these small masterpieces easy to master already received an enthusiastic welcome at the time.
Murray Perahia and Norbert Gertsch continue with this Henle Urtext edition their fruitful revision of the world of Beethoven sonatas.
