Although the term "Ballade" used to be used only in literature and for vocal music, it was introduced in 1836 by Chopin in piano music, with the publication of his Ballade op. 23. And indeed, the four Ballades of Chopin all have the character of a dramatic narrative: the musical thread runs from beginning to end according to a growing tension to reach a grandiose climax. After the "Preludes", we have also submitted this edition to a thorough revision based on the current state of musicological research on Chopin's work. The printed critical apparatus groups together the main data of the research.
