Petrarch, co-founder of humanism and one of the greatest Italian poets has left in his collection "Canzoniere" hundreds of sonnets in which he expresses his adoration for Laura, this mysterious female creature of which no one knows if she really existed .
Some five hundred years later, Liszt composed the sonnets Nos 47, 104 and 123 in the form of poetic-romantic pianistic poems and integrated the versions for solo piano in volume II ("Italy") of his "Pilgrimage Years" (HN 174). The second sonnet Petrarch No. 104 enjoys in particular a great popularity.
