In 1786, by order of the canon of the cathedral of Cadiz, Haydn composed meditative music to be played alternately, on Good Friday, with the reading of the last words of Christ. This orchestral version as well as an adaptation for string quartet (HN 851 and HN 9771) appeared in the spring of 1787 with the Viennese publisher Artaria. Barely ten years later, Haydn also composes an oratorio version, available from Henle in the “Studien-Edition” series (HN 9830). Haydn certainly does not himself produce the version for "Clavicembalo o Forte Piano", but, having read the tests, he praises her saying that it is "very good and written with a particular zeal". Besides, this most expressive work is also remarkably suitable for an organ performance.
