Unlike Mozart, Haydn was not a piano virtuoso. He certainly conducted his orchestral works from the harpsichord and also played his piano sonatas in public, but absolutely did not consider himself a concert pianist. So "only" three piano concertos have come down to him. Because of its original and fresh melodies, its harmonic subtleties and its clear architecture, the concerto for piano and orchestra in D major Hob. XVIII: 11 is the one that is most often played. However, despite his celebrity, we do not know his year of composition, nor the occasion for which it was composed. The preface to the piano reduction presented here discusses these issues in detail. The score is based on that of the complete edition of Haydn's works also published by G. Henle editions.
