In 1828, the last year of his life, Franz Schubert composed three piano sonatas generally regarded as the culmination of a lifetime of work devoted to the genre of the piano sonata. They clearly reveal his role as a successor to the classics. But at the same time it resonates a tone which is deeply and intimately personal to him. The carefully revised edition of this B flat major sonata frequently given in concert is based on the autograph manuscript as well as on the first edition. Schubert seems here once again to bring together all the power of interiority and silence. The serene theme of the first movement particularly touches with its dreamy expression. Without any specific technical difficulty, it nonetheless constitutes a challenge for the performer in terms of the brightness of the sounds and the subtlety of the nuances.
