The “Novellettes” were composed at the same time as the “Scenes of children”, with which they present an undeniable resemblance because of their general climate largely imbued with serenity. In a letter to Clara Wieck, Schumann writes: "In the past three weeks, I have composed so many things for you: pleasant plays, Egmont stories, family scenes with fathers, a wedding, in short, as many of the most pleasant pieces" . It is therefore not surprising that the work has taken the rank of "bestseller" at Henle! The carefully revised edition offers for the first time, in addition to the revised and corrected musical text, a detailed preface providing information on the genesis of the "Novellettes" as well as detailed comments.
