The "Novellettes" were composed at the same time as the "Scenes of children", with which they have an undeniable resemblance because of their general climate largely imbued with serenity. In a letter to Clara Wieck, Schumann writes: "For the past three weeks, I have composed so many things: pleasant plays, stories of Egmont, family scenes with fathers, a wedding, in short, so many very kind plays" . No wonder therefore that the work has taken the rank of "bestseller" at Henle! The edition, carefully revised, offers for the first time, in addition to the musical text revised and corrected, a detailed preface providing information on the genesis of "Novellettes" as well as detailed comments.
