Relatively early, the toccatas of Bach probably date from the years 1707–1713 and represent, so to speak, his period "Sturm und Drang". They were not conceived as a cycle, but independently and at various times, each under a different opus number. In accordance with the genre of the toccata, they are distinguished by their virtuoso character and the presence of improvisation elements, sometimes also of recitatives, without however being devoid of solid polyphonic technique, harmonic fullness and ri-chesse of inexhaustible invention of Bach.
