It was with these works, the most important among Debussy's early works, that the publishing house G. Henle began in 1983 its series of editions of the piano pieces by Debussy. The enormous success of this edition is still not denied. The Arabesques probably appeared shortly before their publication in November 1891. Welcomed warmly when it was published, the work became, after 1906, one of the most popular for the composer, and it now circulates in all kinds of transcriptions for other instruments. The elegant and comfortable ornamentation of the first Arabesque, which despite its constant movement gives the impression of a certain droop, ensures that the piece occupies a special place in both the repertoire of professional pianists and that of ambitious amateurs.
