Among the musical currents to which Debussy has occasionally reacted in his compositions is also the American ragtime. Next to Golliwogg's Cakewalk taken from Children's Corner (HN 382), The little Negro is still used as a standard for cross-over piano teaching today. Debussy had indeed composed this piece for a piano method (that of Théodore Lack), published in 1909. Leduc published in 1924 a separate edition in which, unlike the first edition, measures 22 to 54 are repeated. Producing all its effect, this piece is not too difficult.
