C Major Cello Concerto Hob. VIIb: 1

With their seemingly light and elegant tone, Joseph Haydn's cello and orchestra concertos are a touchstone for any cellist. Concerto in C major Hob. VIIb: 1 was probably written between 1762 and 1765, when Haydn was already chapel master for Prince Esterházy. For a long time, the existence of this concerto was only known because Haydn had mentioned it in the handwritten repertoire that he got from his works, without anyone ever having seen the score. It was not until 1961 that a copy of the work was discovered and allowed him to experience success alongside the famous concerto in D major Hob. VII: 2. For the publication of the piano reduction of this concerto, we had the pleasure of collaborating with Haydn specialist Sonja Gerlach. The latter enriches the urtext edition with a detailed preface in which it addresses in particular the subject of making ornaments and that of the cadences reproduced.
