À partir de 1750 (mort de J.S. Bach), l'ère baroque est décadente. L'aube du classicisme se profile nettement. En 1775, Haydn a quarante-trois ans, Mozart dix-neuf, Beethoven cinq : un autre univers musical a définitivement éclipsé le précédent.
